Supporting Children with Physical Disabilities

Supporting Children with Physical Disabilities at My Therapy Space

Understanding Physical Disabilities in Children

Physical disabilities in children can arise from various conditions, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, genetic disorders, birth injuries and acquired conditions such as traumatic brain injuries or stroke. These conditions can impact movement, coordination, strength, balance, and overall independence in daily activities.

While physical disabilities present unique challenges, they do not define who a child is. With the right support, adaptive strategies, and therapies, children with physical disabilities can gain independence and participate in the activities that they enjoy.

How We Help at My Therapy Space

At My Therapy Space, we are dedicated to providing individualized support for children who have physical disabilities. Our multidisciplinary team of occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dietitians, and therapy assistants work collaboratively to help children achieve their goals.

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists focus on improving children’s daily living skills such as dressing, eating, grooming, and mobility. We use:

  • Assessment and Prescription of Assistive technology and adaptive equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, seating, and communication devices).
  • Fine and gross motor skill development to enhance strength, coordination, and dexterity.
  • Environmental modifications to ensure home and school settings are accessible and functional.
  • Sensory-motor therapy to help children regulate and respond to their environment effectively.

Speech Pathology

For children with physical disabilities, communication can sometimes be a challenge. Our speech pathologists provide:

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) support, including the use of Key word sign, symbols and speech-generating devices
  • In conjunction with the OT may support you to find the best access to your AAC device:  direct access/switches/eye gaze
  • Speech therapy targeting speech development  and swallowing.
  • Functional social communication strategies to enhance interaction and engagement with peers, family, and caregivers.
  • Feeding therapy to support children with difficulties in chewing and swallowing, and children who are tube fed.

Dietetics

Nutritional support is crucial for children with physical disabilities who may experience challenges with chewing, swallowing, digestion, or maintaining a balanced diet. Our dietitians:

  • Develop personalized meal plans to ensure growth and nutrition.
  • Provide texture-modified diets and feeding strategies for safe swallowing, alongside our speech pathology team.
  • Offer guidance on gut health and digestion for children with specific dietary needs.
  • Support families in managing food intolerances, allergies, and mealtime routines.
  • Support children who are tube fed.

Family-Centered and Multidisciplinary Approach

At My Therapy Space, we understand that families and caregivers play a vital role in a child’s progress. Our team works closely with families to provide education, training, and ongoing support so that therapy strategies can be integrated into everyday life.

We also collaborate with schools, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to ensure our young clients have access to a comprehensive support network.

Our goal is to empower children with physical disabilities to gain independence and reach their personal goals. Whether it’s learning to use assistive technology, improving communication, or developing life skills, our team at My Therapy Space is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all.

If your child could benefit from our services, we’d love to support them on their journey. Contact us today to learn more about how My Therapy Space can help!
