The Benefits of Multidisciplinary Support

The Benefits of Multidisciplinary Support

You’ve heard the saying ‘team work makes the dream work,’ such is the case for a multidisciplinary team. At My Therapy Space, our team includes Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Therapy assistants and Dietetics, with a close link  to some wonderful Paediatric physiotherapists on the same floor! We believe this team creates a perfect combination of disciplines and a one-stop shop for a range of different needs.

What is multidisciplinary practice?
Multidisciplinary practice involves bringing together experts from different fields to provide well-rounded care. Rather than working in isolation, professionals collaborate to create a unified approach that addresses all aspects of a child’s needs. This type of teamwork ensures that no area of a child’s health and development is overlooked, leading to more holistic and effective outcomes.

What does this look like in action?

1. Improved Communication and Coordination
Sharing notes and making internal referrals helps team members stay informed about a child’s progress and treatment goals. This coordinated approach ensures that everyone involved in the child’s care is on the same page, to guarantee the child receives a comprehensive, well-integrated treatment plan.

2. Holistic Care
Regular communication between different disciplines allows the team to address various aspects of a child’s development—physical, emotional, cognitive, and social. For example, a Speech Pathologist might inform an Occupational Therapist about challenges with handwriting, which prompts a more integrated, targeted approach to treatment. This ensures that all dimensions of the child’s well-being are considered.

3. Faster Problem Solving
Informal conversations, such as hallway chats or quick check-ins between team members, allow for immediate troubleshooting and idea-sharing. These interactions help the team to make decisions and address challenges promptly. This reduces the likelihood of delays, leading to faster interventions and better care outcomes.

4. Ongoing Learning and Knowledge Sharing
Through constant collaboration, professionals in a multidisciplinary team can learn from each other’s expertise. The sharing of knowledge helps team members stay updated with the latest techniques and practices from various disciplines. For example this ensures that regulation strategies used in occupational therapy sessions are also applied within speech sessions. This upskilling allows clients to receive a well-rounded intervention to achieve their goals. Multidisciplinary practice is about creating a team of experts who work together to address a child’s diverse needs. At My Therapy Space we ensure that we are always sharing knowledge, collaborating on intervention plans and making appropriate internal referrals.
