Psychology

At My Therapy Space, our psychology service supports children, young people and families to better understand what may be happening beneath the surface and to find practical ways to make everyday life feel easier.

Our psychologist works with families to explore a child’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour, anxiety, regulation, relationships, learning and family routines. We recognise that parents and caregivers play such an important role in a child’s development, and we aim to support the whole family, not just the child.

How Psychology Can Help

Psychology support may be helpful for children and families who are experiencing challenges with:

  • emotional regulation
  • anxiety, worry or fears
  • behaviour that is difficult to understand or manage
  • big feelings, meltdowns or shutdowns
  • family stress and wellbeing
  • social and emotional development
  • coping with change or transitions
  • understanding a child’s strengths, needs and learning profile

Our approach is collaborative, family-centred and practical. We work alongside families to understand their values, experiences and goals, and to develop strategies that feel realistic for home, school and everyday life.

Psychological Assessment and Testing

Psychological assessments can help families better understand a child’s strengths, learning profile, behaviour, emotional wellbeing and support needs.

Our psychologist can complete a range of assessments, including:

  • Cognitive (IQ) assessments
  • Academic and educational assessments
  • ADHD assessments
  • Social, emotional and behavioural assessments
  • Adaptive functioning assessments
  • Developmental and functional assessments

Our psychologist can also contribute to multidisciplinary Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments alongside other professionals. While an official ASD diagnosis must be made by a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist in Australia, psychological assessment provides valuable information to support the diagnostic process.

Assessment results are accompanied by practical recommendations to support children, families, schools and therapy teams.

Working Together as a Team

At My Therapy Space, psychology can work closely with our Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy and Dietetics teams where appropriate. This helps us provide more holistic support and ensures that everyone involved in a child’s care is working towards shared goals.
